BOOK ONE · LESSON 100
He says that ... She says that ... They say that ...
他/她/他们说……
A picture lesson on reported speech. The page shows 16 small pictures, each with a caption (tired, thirsty, cold, ill, a cold, a headache, an earache, a toothache, a haircut, a licence, an X-ray, some money, wait, catch, repair, sell), and a box of reporting verbs (says, thinks, believes, knows, understands, is afraid, is sorry, is sure) and clause beginnings (is, feels, has got, needs, wants, can, must, will). Students make sentences of the form 'He/She/They + reporting verb + that + clause' to describe each picture. New vocabulary includes licence. Written exercises (in the textbook) cover rewriting sentences as indirect speech and answering questions using indirect speech. Workbook practice covers reporting what people say (direct to indirect speech), filling in the blanks with reflexive pronouns (myself, yourself, himself, herself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves), and answering personal questions with short answers or full sentences. Grammar exercises practise answering 'What does he say?' questions using reported speech, and changing sentences into reported speech according to the example.
