BOOK ONE · LESSON 101
A card from Jimmy
吉米的明信片
A dialogue lesson on reported speech. Grandmother asks Penny to read Jimmy's card to her. Penny reads the card (direct speech) and then reports it in indirect speech ('He says he's just arrived in Scotland. He says he's staying at a Youth Hostel.'). Grandmother asks what else Jimmy says, and Penny reports that he'll write a letter soon and hopes they are all well. Grandmother, who can't hear very well, asks Penny to speak up. New vocabulary includes Scotland, card, youth, hostel, association, soon, and write. Workbook practice covers comprehension questions on the dialogue and choosing the best word to fill in the blanks. Grammar exercises practise making sentences according to the example (reported speech with 'that') and rewriting sentences using a noun clause according to the example.
